How to use floor lamps

In addition to being a convenient option to light up your favorite reading corner, floor lamps provide an easy way to fix a bare spot in any room. Because floor lamps commonly become a stylish "anchor" in a space, choose wisely! Floor lamps offer both conveniences (they're portable!) Plus true freestanding style.

Generally more affordable than corded lamps, floor lamps are not yet cheap. Extremely inexpensive styles are easy to spot (inexpensive in appearance) and are not recommended. For your investment, be sure to buy a lamp that looks great and is equally functional in your home. Follow these expert tips for choosing and using them in your home.
Choose the right height. The light from a floor lamp must fall in a useful, non-invasive or dazzling way. If you place one too high next to your sofa, the glow from the light bulb underneath could be annoying and not conducive to socializing in a quiet environment. Make sure the light from the lamp is well diffused, in the right direction; Selecting a piece with a flattering shade will help.

Draw attention to your best assets. In addition to being an excellent lighting choice, did you know that floor lamps can provide accent lighting? Consider using one to draw attention to accent pieces from your favorite home, such as a favorite piece of art or decor.

Choose a flattering style. From ultra stylish and contemporary to traditional (think: tasselled shades), Turkish Lamps are available in a myriad of designs. Because they help "define" space in a big way, like other lighting fixtures, choose one that matches well with your existing decor. Some of today's most prominent trends include:

Mid-century style ("chandelier" silhouettes, curved bases)
Bright colors, matte finishes
Shades of sheer fabric
Bold fabric patterns
Drum tones
Place for optimal convenience. Look around your space: where do you find yourself hanging out most often? If you read the newspaper in your chair every morning, put a floor lamp there. If your kids do their homework in the dining room, it might make sense there, too. Many even have coordinating table lamp (or other fixture) options available, so you can really superimpose your lighting effectively.

Consider the change. Standard switches include a knob or drag chain under the screen. Some are available with 3-way switch options or even dimmer switches, allowing you to adjust the brightness (ideal for mood settings!). Others come with line switches or foot switches on the wire, which is convenient in some situations.

Use a compact fluorescent to save energy. Compact fluorescent bulbs can be replaced with incandescent bulbs on almost any device (although you may not be able to adjust the brightness with 3-way switches). If you plan to leave your lamp on for long periods of time, this energy saving option is definitely worth considering. Compact fluorescents also allow for more brightness, with less power.
