The need for interactive features in smart watches

Sponsored by Seiko (Japan), smart watches have existed for approximately three decades. The first versions of smart watches allowed the user to feed data, view different time zones and perform basic calculations. The next generation of these devices incorporated GPS and a number of other wireless sensor features, including thermometer, compass, altimeter, barometer, camera and accelerometer. Several combinations of these characteristics were developed to attract a specific set of consumers.

However, it seems that these types of personal devices are running out of fuel to attract consumers. The reason for this is the continuous explosion of smart portable devices, mainly smartphones and tablets. Now that it is possible to miniaturize a large number of electronic devices, watch manufacturers are tempted to transform personal watches into portable computing devices.

Several features of smartphones can be made compatible so that they can be offered in the next generation of personal devices. Companies such as Pebble and WIMM One (now part of Google) have already made a name by introducing devices that can communicate with a user's phone through the Bluetooth option. The ability to notify the user of an incoming call and display SMS directly on the watch screen is promoted as favorable features.

The next logical step will be to incorporate some form of transparent screen through which a user can scan a product to receive information in real time. Pedestrian navigation can also open the way to absorb augmented reality features. In this context, Google has already filed a patent for a transparent lid to achieve such a feat. However, at present there is no certainty about the commercial availability of said device. smart watch

So what is really offered now?

At the moment, technology companies are finding value by presenting watches connected to smartphones. In 2013 there were three outstanding releases, including Samsung Galaxy Gear, Sony SmartWatch and Qualcomm Toq.

The starting space will also be equally important to consider, given the existence of collective financing platforms, such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo. While PH Technical Labs (funded through Kickstarter) will launch its HOT watch, Kreyos (funded through Indiegogo) will launch its Meteor smart watch brand, both during the first half of 2014. Gesture control, reception and rejection functions Calls, send SMS and receive notifications in real time are becoming standard features for this type of interactive gadgets.
