The origin of the Word taxi service

Have you ever considered where the name of taxi services originated? Have you ever thought about why people refer to taxis as taxis? Have you ever wondered why most taxis around the world are yellow? Well, the name "taxi" dates back to the early 17th century, when residents of London and Paris used horse-drawn carriages to transport customers and goods from one location to another. People would seek black taxi  services especially when traveling to distant destinations, a fact that is described in various writings as Shakespeare's. It is from this simple idea that the concept of taxis became the taxi services of today. But why was the taxi name specifically chosen?

This is a French word that was coined by Harry Allen, a famous New York businessman, and who is recognized as the first person to import taxis. Initially, he called them "cabriolet taximeter". Cabriolet is a French term for transportation and the taximeter was a device that was used to calculate how much the passenger would be charged for transportation services. The prefix taxi originated from a Latin term taxa which means "to collect". The name was later abbreviated as a taxi. Harry Allen also realized that the color yellow would help customers easily distinguish between the cab and other vehicles.

During the Marne Miracle in World War I, when a Birmingham pub was bombed, the fire official made a plea to the taxi association to help transport the wounded to the hospital. Since then, taxi services have been very useful in times of emergency; for example, when someone is sick and needs urgent medical attention, or when they urgently need to reach a certain destination. When traveling with your own vehicle, you may have to worry about finding a safe parking position, which is not the case when using a cabin.

If you drive to work every morning, chances are you've noticed how much time you lose in traffic jams. While idle in traffic, a lot of fuel is wasted keeping the engine running while waiting to move the vehicle just a few inches. Using a taxi service would be the best way to avoid this and, in the process, minimize your vehicle's fuel, repair and maintenance costs.

If a majority opted for taxi services to their workplaces and any other destinations, the threat of traffic jams and collisions would be greatly reduced. This would also lead to lower carbon emissions as there would be fewer cars on the roads emitting carbon dioxide, and therefore global warming would slow down. Using a taxi is one of the best ways to travel. There are several taxi companies that offer reliable and efficient services; some even promise to dispatch a taxi as soon as the phone call ends.
