Indian visa procedure: the steps necessary to obtain a visa

The Indian government has strict guidelines on visa issuance and obtaining an Indian visa can be challenging depending on your needs. As long as the full documents are presented, a visa is issued within 48 hours. The official government portal allows the submission of applications and lists all the documents that must be attached to the application.

A visa is a certificate that a government has verified the credentials of a person seeking to enter the country. This is evidenced in the visa certificate issued attached to the applicant's passport. The visa also grants permission to the person for a period of stay in the country, which in India does not exceed 180 days.

The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has authorized all Indian embassies and high commissions to collect visa applications from foreign citizens. There is a nominal visa fee payable, except for citizens of certain countries such as Burundi and Mongolia who obtain free visas. A visa to travel to India is not required for Nepalese and Bhutanese citizens.

The Government of India portal has detailed instructions on  India visa applications, the mode of presentation and the type of visa applicable according to the purpose of the trip.

4. For people with a tourist visa, a gap of at least two months is essential between two consecutive visits.

5. Diplomatic and official passports are processed at embassies and no visa fees are charged.

6. Tourist Visa On arrival has been introduced on a limited basis for citizens of Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand and Singapore in exceptional circumstances.

7. Processing time is generally around two business days. The list of consular holidays will be available on the government website.
